Op 21 februari 2011 brengt The Low Anthem haar nieuwe album Smart Flesh uit, de opvolger van het bewierookte debuut Oh My God, Charlie Darwin uit 2009. Het nieuwe album Smart Flesh opgenomen in leegstaande fabriek: ‘We knew right away when we stepped into the factory that the space was really the main instrument for the whole record.’

De meerderheid van de elf nummers op Smart Flesh werden opgenomen in een grote leegstaande pastasaus-fabriek in Central Falls, Rhode Island met additionele opnamen in een garage waar voorheen reptielen werden gefokt. Een plek die door de band werd omgedoopt tot ‘the gator pit’. Het album is gemixt door Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, M. Ward, Monsters Of Folk). Naast Ben Knox Miller, Jeff Prystowsky en Jocie Adams is The Low Anthem inmiddels uitgebreid met een vierde lid, Mat Davidson.

Voordat de band haar mobiele opnamestudio in de fabriek zette, had ze al een dozijn plekken bezocht. Miller: “We knew right away when we stepped into the factory that the space was really the main instrument for the whole record. The resonance was chilling. We were able to experiment with new recording techniques to capture the sound at different distances. Mics 100-200 feet away caught the sound barrelling across the room.” The Low Anthem is gefascineerd door toon en timbre en gebruikte voor Smart Flesh weer veel verschillende instrumenten waaronder een mondharp, een zingende zaag, een stylofoon, drie antieke luchtorgels (hersteld door de band), oversized drumkits en een gecompliceerd systeem om geluid opnieuw te versterken via diverse ruimtes in de fabriek.

Sinds de release van Oh My God, Charlie Darwin heeft The Low Anthem een headline show gegeven in Shepherd’s Bush Empire, speelde ze met Iron and Wine, The National en Emmylou Harris en was ze te gast bij Later with Jools Holland en David Letterman. In juni won de band de Breakthrough Award van Mojo Magazine.
