De Britse The Kinks mogen, zonder twijfel, tot de eredivisie van de pop en rockbands van de muziekgeschiedenis gerekend worden. Hun sound bleek van grote invloed op veel andere, veelal Britse, bands die na het succes van The Kinks ontstonden. Op hun eerste album wist de band reeds hun markante sound te vinden. Naast sterke covers van songs als Too Much Monkey Business en Cadillac stonden gelijk al klassiekers als You Really Got Me en All Day And All Of The Night. Toen derde single You Really Got Me, een song die wel de eerste aanzet tot hardrock wordt genoemd, niet alleen in thuisland Engeland een nummer 1 hit werd maar ook in Amerika en Australië in de top 10 belandde kon de band gelijk op wereldtour.

Het tweede album Kinda Kinks werd vervolgens gelijk na een tour door Azië opgenomen en het was (helaas) te horen dat de band een haastklus had moeten doen. Hoewel vrijwel alle songs nu door Kinks frontman Ray Davies waren geschreven (op een fijne cover van Dancing In The Streets na) en beter waren als het debuut, klonk de productie vlak. Terwijl juist The Kinks de dynamiek in songs zo perfect konden aanvoelen.

Met hun derde album zetten The Kinks alle zaken recht. Niet alleen de stevige bluesrock die de band op de eerste album liet horen was op Kontroversy aanwezig maar ook de nieuwe Kinks stijl met meer melodische songs. Vooral in songs als The World Keeps Going Round’ en I’m On An Island liet Ray Davies zijn grote klasse horen. Ondertussen hadden broers Ray en Dave Davies een reputatie opgebouwd van ruziënde broers, ruzies die zelfs op het podium tot vechtpartijen konden leiden. De albumtitel Kontroversy was daar een perfecte afspiegeling van.
